Guwahati is first and foremost a city of rivers, and not by chance. The Brahmaputra itself is more than two kilometers wide here, and most of what is interesting in the city for a couple can be found either in the river itself, in the air above it, or simply gazing upon it.
There is one feature of the city that requires an adjustment of your plans, which no travel guide will mention. Guwahati is located on the far eastern corner of India, but runs on the time zone of Mumbai. During winter, sunset is at half-past four. By six o’clock, it is already pitch black. Your romantic evening planned at seven is long over.
In this guide, we will discuss the attractions of Guwahati, four ways to cross the river in four price categories, the truth about Kamakhya and day trips to do as a couple.
Guwahati for Couples at a Glance:
| Detail | What to Know |
|---|---|
| The city | Assam’s largest city, on the south bank of the Brahmaputra |
| Best season | October to April, with November to February ideal |
| Sunset time | Around 4:30 PM in winter, closer to 6 PM in summer |
| Signature couple experience | The ropeway across the Brahmaputra at Rs 100 a head |
| Cheapest river trip | Government ferry, roughly Rs 10 to Rs 30 |
| Ideal trip length | 2 days for the city, 4 if you add Meghalaya |
| Most crowded sight | Kamakhya Temple, especially on weekends |
| Best-kept secret | Madan Kamdev ruins, about 40 km away |
| Nearest wildlife | Pobitora, around 50 km, with a famous rhino density |
| Biggest planning mistake | Planning a sunset activity for after 5 PM in winter |
The 4:30 PM Problem:
The country is governed by one time zone based on a longitude much further west than that of Assam. As far as its impact in Guwahati goes, it is quite significant, and the sun rises at least an hour before six in the winter and sets around five in the evening.
It becomes important in the case of the city in question much more so than in any other place in the world since all the best couple activities happen during daytime. The ropeway stops working in the late afternoon, ferries cease operating, Umananda Island closes its doors in the early evening, and the restaurant and market close at an earlier time than in most Indian cities.
The solution is easy; you simply start your day at 7AM instead of 10AM, go for a boat trip in the late afternoon instead of in the evening, and have your dinner at seven in the evening instead of at nine.
Crossing the Brahmaputra: Four Ways, Four Prices
This is the heart of a Guwahati couples trip, and there is more than one way to do it.
| Option | Approximate Cost (Rs) | Duration | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|
| Guwahati Ropeway | 100 one way, 200 return | 8 to 15 minutes | The view, and the photographs |
| Government ferry | 10 to 30 per person | 10 to 20 minutes | Cheapest, most local |
| Boat to Umananda Island | 30 to 60 shared, more private | 10 minutes each way | The island temple |
| Evening dinner cruise | 1,000 to 2,500 per person | 1.5 to 2 hours | A proper date night |
| Private hired boat | From around 1,000 | Flexible | Sunset with nobody else aboard |
The ropeway is the one to do
Guwahati has India’s longest river ropeway, spanning approximately 1.8 kilometers, from Panbazar near Nehru Park to the opposite north bank just behind Dol Govinda Temple. This rope-way was launched in 2020, and the journey takes approximately eight to fifteen minutes, through a glass-roofed cabin, flying above Umananda Island. The fares are about Rs 100 one way and Rs 200 for the round trip; special discounts are available for kids.
Two things you need to know. First, the rope-way normally runs from the early morning till half past four with a mid-day closure, and secondly, it remains closed on the second and fourth Thursdays of the month. The local hack is that you use the ropeway one way and come back via boat, reducing the waiting time and having a whole new experience of the same river.

Umananda Island
The rock island within the Brahmaputra is known to be one of the smallest inhabited islands on any river. It has a Shiva temple constructed in the later half of the seventeenth century during an Ahom king. It also houses a few individuals of the endangered species of the golden langurs that live on its trees.
There are boats that ferry visitors from Kachari Ghat. They take around ten minutes to reach the destination. The temple opens for public viewing from the early morning till about six in the evening. There is a steep ascent to the temple via stairs from the jetty area. So, it is advisable to dress comfortably.
Kamakhya Temple, Honestly
This is probably the most famous place in Guwahati, and the one that has the biggest chance of going wrong, if you do not come prepared.
- Queues can be pretty long – two to four hours in the regular line. Faster-entry tickets can be bought, and it is worthwhile to do so if you have only limited time.
- During the Ambubachi Mela, usually held in June, there is a big influx of pilgrims, and the temple is closed for some days. If you plan to visit with your partner in a calm setting, do it outside that period.
- Dress modestly, take off your shoes and be aware of the limited possibility to take pictures.
- Animal sacrifice is an important ritual at this temple, which may cause distress to some visitors. It is better to know about it beforehand.
- Hilltop position of the place provides great views on Brahmaputra River and the city.
Quiet Places in the City
- Nabagraha Temple: a temple dedicated to the nine planets that lies on Chitrachal hill. It is lesser known than Kamakhya, with a tranquil ambiance and good scenery. Ideal for an effortless hill trek in the city.
- Basistha Ashram: a temple complex located near the confluence of three streams within a forest area that lies around twenty minutes from the city. Cool and quiet on a weekday.
- Deepor Beel: a Ramsar site and freshwater wetland near the periphery of the city that hosts migratory birds during winters. A great place to visit in the early mornings for birds if you or your girlfriend like birds.
- Srimanta Sankaradeva Kalakshetra: a cultural institution comprising a museum, open air theater, heritage village and gardens. A great place for two hours and the best place to learn about Assamese culture in one place.
- Assam State Museum and Brahmaputra riverfront: visit both. Spend an hour at the museum, followed by the riverfront and Nehru park during sunset.
Madan Kamdev: The Ruins Nobody Talks About
Around forty kilometres from the city lies an isolated archeological site often referred to as the Khajuraho of Assam. It consists of remains dating back to the tenth and eleventh century and contains sculptures and carvings and temple remnants that have been found strewn across the low hill surrounded by trees.
It is peaceful, raw and rarely crowded, and that’s exactly what makes it perfect for couples. There is a small museum inside where one can find recovered artifacts. One can visit in the morning and spend around two hours there, driving time included, along with Hajo for a day’s outing.
Day Trips That Work as a Couple
Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary
Approximately 50 km east from here lies a small wildlife sanctuary that boasts one of the largest populations of the one-horned rhinoceros. It’s a much smaller place than Kaziranga, and a shorter drive to get there, so it’s the better option for a quick day trip. Jeep and elephant safaris are conducted in the morning and late afternoon.
Sualkuchi
Another weaving village is situated on the north bank, some thirty-five kilometres away, which has been referred to as the Manchester of the East. It is here that the unique and precious golden Assamese muga silk is made – an extremely rare silk indeed. Not only can you see the handlooms at work and purchase from the weavers themselves, but you get a much better souvenir!
Hajo
Twenty-four kilometres from the capital is another oddity in that it serves as a pilgrimage destination for Hindus, Muslims, and Buddhists alike. The Hayagriva Madhava Temple rests on top of a hill, attracting Buddhist and Hindu pilgrims, while the neighbouring Poa Mecca is an essential Islamic pilgrimage site. Not many places can boast such diversity in one little town.
Chandubi Lake
The natural lake which is about sixty kilometres away was created by an earthquake, surrounded by forests and tribal settlements. It has boating facilities and almost nobody there except for weekends. This is the only option for escaping from the hustle and bustle of city life.
Shillong and Meghalaya
Around three hours by road. But if you have four days instead of two, that is what the holiday should consist of. Guwahati is more suited as a gateway to the northeastern states of India as opposed to being a destination on its own right.
Eating Together in Guwahati
- The Assamese thali, made with rice and khar, dal, fish curry, greens and tenga, is definitely worth trying at least once. Price range: Rs 300-Rs 600 per head.
- Grilled or skewered meat, which translates to ‘khorika’, is the local specialty.
- The first dish that would be recommended by any Assamese home would be masor tenga – the sour fish curry.
- Pitha, rice based desserts, are available all through the year but are available in abundance during Bihu.
- Fancy bazaar and Paltan bazaar for street foods and markets but both become extremely crowded after evenings.

Best Time to Visit Guwahati
| Months | Conditions | Verdict |
|---|---|---|
| November to February | Cool, dry, clear, very early sunsets | Best window of the year |
| March to April | Warm, green, Bihu celebrations mid-April | Excellent, festive |
| May to September | Heavy monsoon, river in spate | Dramatic but disruptive |
| October | Rain easing, everything green | Good value shoulder month |
Bohag Bihu falls around the middle of April and is the biggest festival of the Assamese year, with music, dance and open celebration across the city. It is a wonderful time to visit and a difficult time to find a room, so book well ahead.
A 2-Day Couples Plan
| Day | Morning | Afternoon and Evening |
|---|---|---|
| Day 1 | Kamakhya early, then Nabagraha Temple | Ropeway across, boat back, riverfront sunset |
| Day 2 | Umananda Island, then Kalakshetra | Madan Kamdev or Pobitora, dinner in town |
On the third day, choose between Pobitora for rhinos, Sualkuchi and Hajo together for silk and pilgrimage, or Chandubi Lake for a full day of quiet. With four or more, drive to Shillong.
Practical Tips Most Guwahati Guides Skip
- Start your day around seven in the morning. The winter days get dark by five, and the entire city works earlier than what you expect.
- Verify the days when the ropeway is shut down ahead of the time, and go back by boat instead of having to wait in line two times.
- Take a cab for the entire day if you visit places like Madan Kamdev, Hajo or Sualkuchi since there is no public transport there.
- Do not plan to visit Kamakhya in June if you do not come here for the Ambubachi Mela in June.
- Bring money with you for ferries, smaller temples and villages since credit cards will not work.
- The rains last from May to September and the floods on Brahmaputra are really heavy.
- If one of you wants to go to Kaziranga, plan an extra day there since it is a four hour drive.
Trivia You Can Use to Sound Like a Regular
- Guwahati lies on the extreme eastern border of India but operates on the same time zone as Mumbai, and that’s why winter sunsets are seen at about 4:30 p.m. in Guwahati.
- One of the very rare instances of a river in the Indian subcontinent that has a masculine name is Brahmaputra, and it is so wide that a rope bridge measuring almost two kilometres in length is required to cross it.
- There exists a small population of golden langur on Umananda Island. This endangered species of primates is available only in a small region of Assam and Bhutan.
- This unique muga silk is produced only at Sualkuchi, and its unique characteristic lies in its golden color, which enhances with every wash.
- Pobitora boasts of the largest density of one-horned rhinos at a location of a sanctuary, which is very small as compared to Kaziranga.
- The town of Hajo is a pilgrimage place for Hindus, Muslims, and Buddhists alike.
Final Take: Build the Day Around the River and the Light
The list of places to visit in Guwahati with your partner depends on the way you decide to interact with Brahmaputra. Travel across it using the ropeway, return by a boat, stand at the riverside watching the sunset, take a ten minutes ferry to reach a temple that is located on a rock in the middle of the river. This activity will cost you a few hundreds of rupees but this is the only thing that Guwahati has to offer to its visitors.
For peace in the hills and no crowds, there is Nabagraha; for ruins in solitude – Madan Kamdev; for wildlife and weaving in half-day – Pobitora and Sualkuchi. Get an early start as the light will end soon; book your stay away from Ambubachi in June rather than during it; in case of more than two days, go further and drive towards Meghalaya. Guwahati is a beautiful place for two days and an even better gateway.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Guwahati good for couples?
Yes, for two to three days. It is the river which pulls you in, along with the ropeway, boats, and the island of Umananda, along with peaceful temples on hills and good food. But after three days, most couples will find it better to use it as a base for Meghalaya or Kaziranga.
What is the most romantic thing to do in Guwahati?
It is the ropeway across the Brahmaputra in the evening at about Rs 100 per person each way with the return journey by boat. It is less than a two-hour trip, costs very little, and offers the widest possible view of the city and the water.
How many days are enough for Guwahati?
June at Ambubachi Mela Kamakhya it season for pilgrim crowds are huge, temple stay shut for days. Similarly throughout May to September more often than not, when overwhelming storm precipitation and Brahmaputra flooding like downpour have been known to upset vessels and streets.
Is Kamakhya Temple worth visiting as a couple?
There are good views from the hill top towards the river and the temple is quite important. There are going to be long lines at the entrance; plan for that. Wear modest clothing and remember that there is animal sacrifice at the temple, and some people find that offensive.
Can you visit Kaziranga as a day trip from Guwahati?
Not really. The journey is about four hours in each direction, leaving no time for a safari. Pobitora, about fifty kilometers from Guwahati, is the realistic option, as it has an abundance of one-horned rhinos.
