Yercaud: The Low-Cost Hill Station

Yercaud is situated in the Shevaroy Hills, at about 1,500 metres above sea level, and one hour north of Salem. Even the tourism department of Tamil Nadu claims Yercaud as one of the most economical hill stations in all of India. For decades now, Yercaud has been known as the poor man’s Ooty, which is a misnomer for such an enchanting place. It is small, peaceful, and much less expensive than the Nilgiri hills, as it is approachable from a major railway junction in an hour’s time.

The heart of Yercaud is its lake, the view points, and the coffee.

Kiliyur Falls

The excess water in Yercaud Lake falls down a distance of 300 feet to reach the Kiliyur valley. • Agaya Gangai Falls: The major attraction, falling in a drop of over 200 feet in the gorge. Half a day should be allowed for the activity, and it is not advisable to do it in the afternoons when the sun is hot.

Mettur Dam and Sankagiri Fort

Two very different half-day options in opposite directions.

Mettur Dam

Around 50 kilometers from here, this is one of the biggest dams in India constructed over the river Kaveri and completed in the 1930s. This dam creates the Stanley Reservoir and provides irrigation and electricity for vast areas. The park is there beneath the dam, boating on the reservoir and views from the wall. There are limitations for photography in some places, please follow the signs.

Sankagiri Fort

This site is located approximately thirty-eight kilometers away from Salem. It is a fifteenth-century hill fort with multiple gateways and ramparts built on the hill. It has passed into different hands during the Vijayanagara, Mysore, and colonial eras. There is no shade for the climb, and it takes about forty-five minutes to reach.

• Kottai Mariamman Temple: the city’s most significant temple and the site of a massive annual festival which takes up several days of the year.
• Sugavaneswarar Temple: an ancient Shiva temple located in the old section of the city – a peaceful place to spend half an hour or so.

This paradox is worthy of statement. During the months that the waterfalls would look their best, the chances of having the water activities closed and of having slippery ghats roads would be higher. If it is the coracle ride at Hogenakkal that you have traveled for, then visit during dry months and expect a less impressive waterfall.

• Salem Junction is a good railway junction and easily connected one making Salem a true convenient base. Get accommodation close to the railway station and travel by cabs for the day trips.
• Get cars with drivers for Hogenakkal and Kolli Hills. Both are long day trips and Kolli Hills ghat road is not a place where you can learn driving on the hills.

Salem may not have the best sites to visit, but that does not matter much. The city will afford you a great railway station, accommodation, food and about half a day for temples and markets. Salem offers you the advantage of being close to other cities. For instance, Yercaud is an hour’s drive, Sankagiri and Mettur take a half-day journey while Hogenakkal and Kolli Hills take a whole day. Count your hairpin turns. Yercaud will take you 20 hairpins while Kolli Hills will take you seventy bends. Travel between November and February, find out about the coracles before visiting Hogenakkal and spend at least three days there instead of two. Salem is not going to make any top ten in Tamil Nadu list, but it sure beats others.
